Metal Building System
A Pre-Engineered Building (PEB), also known as a Pre-Engineered Metal Building (PEMB) or simply a Metal Building System (MBS), is a steel structure built over a structural concept of primary and secondary members, and roof sheeting connected to each other. The structural members of a Metal Building System are custom designed to be high in strength while remaining light in weight.
At present, steel is the material of choice for most modern building construction compared to concrete and timber. Thus, steel building designs and Metal Building Systems have become more flexible, durable, and adaptable. In the future as well, the choice of steel in Metal Building Systems will continue to offer similar advantages.
Structural Components of Metal Building System
Primary Sections - Column,Rafters.
Secondary Sections - Purlins, Tie rods, Eave Strut, Rake angles, Girts.
Cranes and Mazzanines.
Roofing and Cladding - Roof Panel and Wall Panel.
Accessories – Canopy, Turbo Vent, Ridge Vent, Gutters, Crane Runways,
Insulations, Louvers, Roof curb, Sealants, Fasteners etc.
Use of Metal Building System (PEB Concept)
The Metal Building System concept has been highly successful and well established in North America and Australia and is now expanding rapidly in the U.K. and other European countries. Metal Building Systems are ideal for construction in remote and hilly areas due to their low cost, light weight, and fast installation.
The PEB/Metal Building System approach has acted as a catalyst in infrastructure development. Single-storied residential buildings can be constructed quickly in any geographical location—whether in extremely hot, cold, hilly, or high rainfall zones, plains, or seismic areas.
The Metal Building System rigid frame comprises built-up members with tapered or straight columns and tapered rafters. The frames are erected by bolting the end plates of connecting sections together.
Applications of Metal Building System
In India, Pre-Engineered Metal Building Systems find primary application in the construction of warehouses and industrial buildings. Recently, focus has expanded to rural and urban housing projects, farmhouses, and slum rehabilitation projects.
Applications of Metal Building Systems include:
Material Specifications of Metal Building System Members:
Primary Built-up Members:
High-grade steel plate conforming to ASTM A572M Grade 345 Type 1, with a minimum yield strength of 34.5 kN/cm². These are factory painted with a minimum of 40 microns (DFT) of red oxide primer.
Secondary Members:
Galvanized high-grade steel conforming to ASTM A653 Structural Quality Grade 50 with zinc coating G90, available in 1.5 mm, 1.75 mm, 2.0 mm, and 2.5 mm thicknesses, having a minimum yield strength of 34.5 kN/cm².
Bracing Systems:
M.S. Rod bracing shall conform to structural components of ASTM A36 Grade 36 or equivalent, with a minimum yield stress of 34.5 kN/cm².
Specification of Steel in Metal Building Systems
Flange and web materials for built-up sections of all PEB/Metal Building System structural members are fabricated from high-grade steel plate conforming to IS: 2062, ASTM A572 Grade 50, or Grade 345 Type.
Purlins, which are the secondary members of the Metal Building System, are cold-formed Z and C-shaped sections made from high-grade steel conforming to ASTM A607 Grade 50.
